The glory days of Montclair’s architectural history are tangible as you climb the steps to the front porch of this charming Victorian. The home was originally built by the Hincks family, who owned the large farmhouse on Euclid Street, directly behind Dodd Street. The three Victorians on Dodd were built by the Hincks for their grown up children, which might explain why they were built close together.
You will be struck by the high ceilings, beautiful hardwood floors, period moldings, working pocket doors – details which convey a sense of charm, beauty and history. The stained glass windows in the foyer and dining room were added by the current owners, commissioned from Brooklyn artist, Ernest Porcelli. The butler’s pantry has been wonderfully preserved, just updated with some new hardware and paint colors.
The farmhouse kitchen has a new dishwasher and wall oven, and offers eat-in space as it is, but also would have immense potential if extended out the back of the house. The current owners loved some of the vintage touches of the home and kept them intact as much as possible. Although the electrical service has been updated, some of the light switches are reproduction push button switches from Restoration Hardware. Many light fixtures are period reproductions from Rejuvenation.
The second floor has three well-sized bedrooms, plus a small den/office that could also be used as a dressing room for the master or even converted into a master bathroom. The closets are oversized, an unusual feature for older Montclair homes. The second floor bathroom has been tastefully renovated with modern fixtures and tile. Another full bathroom with walk-in shower can be found in the basement, part of which has been finished into a TV/family room.
The third floor has two spacious, light-filled rooms, perfect for use as bedrooms, guest space, studio/workspace, or family rooms. Perhaps even a future master suite.
3 Dodd Street is the perfect urban suburban homestead. Several organic vegetable beds have been left intact for your use, along with extensive perennials plantings and shrubs. There’s even a fabulous chicken coop – no roosters allowed! Please note that the shed is being sold in ‘as is’ condition, but it’s handy for storing garden tools.
Commuting from 3 Dodd Street is a breeze, with plenty of options. Walk just to the end of Dodd Street and pick up the Glen Ridge jitney bus on Ridgewood Avenue, which takes you to the Glen Ridge train station, just a 30 minute train ride into Penn Station. Or walk to either Watchung Plaza or Walnut Street in Montclair to pick up the midtown direct there. Finally, you can take the Decamp #33 bus (Grove St) into Port Authority, just a few steps away.
